The late Chadwick Boseman and Jessica Walter were among the Emmy Award nominees announced Tuesday despite their deaths in recent years.

Both Boseman, who’s best known for his starring role in Black Panther, and Walter, who had a lengthy film and television career going back to the mid-1960s, were nominated for their voiceover work in animation.

Former Saturday Night Live star Norm Macdonald was also among the departed stars to be honored with a nomination for his bittersweet comedy special Nothing Special, which he recorded shortly before his death.

Boseman received his Emmy nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for reviving his Black Panther character T’Challa for Disney+’s Marvel series What If…?, which portrays popular characters from Marvel properties but imagines them in scenarios that depart from the films and comics.

Boseman only recorded for a short time, as What If…? episodes are only around 30 minutes long.

In a press conference from August 2021, director Bryan Andrews said that, ‘None of us knew what he was going through at the time,’ according to Deadline.

His episode imagines a scenario in which T’Challa took on the role of Star Lord from Guardians Of The Galaxy, rather than Peter Quill, who is played in the franchise by Chris Pratt.

Boseman’s death originally came as a shock when he died on August 28, 2020, after battling colon cancer.

The actor had been diagnosed with stage III colon cancer back in 2016, but he kept his illness a secret from the public and continued to star in films, including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which he shot in the summer of 2019 before its posthumous release.

That film earned him a posthumous Academy Award nomination.

His voice role in What If…? was his final performance prior to his death at age 43.

Walter, who is probably best known for her roles in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 directorial debut Play Misty For Me as a former lover–turned–crazed stalker and her comedy series Arrested Development, earned her posthumous Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for starring in FXX’s animated series Archer.

She played Malory Archer, a woman running a private spy agency, while the title character, her son, was voiced by H. Jon Benjamin.

The show’s twelfth season was her final before her death in her sleep on March 24, 2021, at age 80.

Archer, which has been renewed for a thirteenth season, paid tribute to the late star with the finale episode of its twelfth season.

Comedian Norm Macdonald was showered with three posthumous Emmy nominations following his death on September 14, 2021, at age 61 from leukemia.

He was nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special and Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special.

Macdonald had received his diagnosis nine years earlier, but he feared sharing the news might change the perception of his work and comedy, so he shared it only with family, as well as his agent and a producing partner.

The comedian had planned to film a stand-up special in front of a live audience, but in order to ensure that the material was immortalized, he filmed a version of the set at home by himself with the mocking title Nothing Special.

It ended up being his final comedy special, and it was released posthumously on May 30 of this year.

Netflix, which released the special, included a chat among several of his comedian friends and former costars, including Dave Chappelle, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Adam Sandler, Molly Shannon and David Spade.

Although Macdonald’s mortality came up periodically in the special, he didn’t give any hints of his impending death.

Intimate: He was nominated Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), as well as directing and writing for his at-home comedy special Nothing Special, which he recorded shortly before his death
