It comes after the Hemsworth family were slammed over a birthday cake prank on their twin sons.

On Wednesday morning, Today show hosts Sarah Abo and Karl Stefanovic defended Chris and his wife Elsa over criticism directed at the Hollywood couple.

The breakfast TV presenters said they couldn’t believe the outrage that was sparked after some of their Instagram followers took issue with the ‘ridiculous’ way Elsa pushed one of their son’s faces into his cake.

Karl burst out laughing at the photo, saying it was all in good fun and the outrage on social media was ridiculous.

Imitating a disapproving old man, he said: ‘I think it sends out a bad message!’

He then added on a more serious note: ‘What a joke. It’s a face in a cake. Now we can’t play pin the tail on the donkey!’

‘He’s such a terrible father,’ Sarah jokingly added.

Entertainment reporter Brooke Boney agreed the outrage was ridiculous.

‘Saying this is a violent image is a bit too much, a bit of a stretch. They’re eating cake!’ she said.

Elsa and Chris were called out for their parenting style while celebrating their twin sons Tristan and Sasha’s ninth birthday on Monday.

Some of Chris’ followers criticised Elsa for participating in the birthday tradition.

‘Why people smash their kid’s face in the cake is above my understanding but whatever,’ one person wrote.

‘Why do people think this is funny?’ another added.

‘In my country [this is] done, but it’s very poorly [looked upon] because several accidents have already happened,’ a third said.

However, many rushed to the defence of the Hemsworths, and said the tradition was just a bit of harmless family humour.

Chris’ post was captioned: ‘Happy ninth birthday to my two little men! Only one way to eat cake in this house and that’s to have mum slam your head into it face first!’
