Glam Sarah Lancashire looks worlds away from Happy Valley as she enjoys a date with husband Peter Salmon in London

She has been on TV screens as the no-nonsense Sgt Catherine Cawood – usually sporting a black eye or a bruised face from scrapes with criminals.

But Sarah Lancashire looked worlds away from Happy Valley as she enjoyed a fancy date with her husband Peter Salmon in London on Friday night.

The actress, 58, and Peter put on a loved-up display as they headed out in the capital hand-in-hand.

Sarah cut a chic figure in a cosy black coat, polo neck and suede boots. She wore her hair in an elegant chignon and toted a large black bag.

Peter, meanwhile, rocked a double denim look with a suede coat and scarf.

The couple headed out in London as her Happy Valley co-star James Norton took to the stage in Richmond to play disabled lawyer Jude St Francis in A Little Life, an adaptation of the Booker-nominated novel by Hanya Yanagihara.

The actor’s latest role sees him shedding rather more – with the actor performing naked on stage.

While James is treading the boards, Sarah and Peter, who married in 2001 and have a son, are said to be setting up a production company together, having filed paperwork for Via Pictures in January.

They were also spotted house hunting in west London last month after the Happy Valley finale.

The BAFTA Television Awards nominations are announced this Wednesday, with viewers previously stating they wanted the former Corrie star to ‘win all the awards’ after her gripping portrayal of officer Sgt Catherine Cawood in the BBC drama, set in Yorkshire.

Series three concluded in February and  while many fans were expecting a high-octane conclusion, and perhaps even Catherine’s demise, writer Sally Wainwright’s decision to pivot her finale around a 15 minute long kitchen table war of words between Tommy and Catherine left viewers in awe.

‘A stand-off worth waiting for – no guns, no knives, no punches but a battle of words which Catherine badly needed to say. Superb stuff by Sally Wainwright a tour de fore turn by Sarah Lancashire & a whirlwind of emotion from James Norton. What a finale,’ declared one viewer.

Others hailed Sarah’s performance, with a fan deciding that ‘she deserves all the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Oscars and it still won’t be enough.’

‘I already feel sorry for any drama or actress up against Happy Valley and Sarah Lancashire at next year’s BAFTAs. Forget it it’s over, you haven’t got a chance,’ agreed writer Emma Kennedy.

The Sunday Times’ Rosamund Urwin pointed out: ‘I hope the success of Happy Valley means there are currently loads of dramas being commissioned with 50-something women as the protagonists, especially if they aren’t always completely likeable characters. Sarah Lancashire is just stellar.’

‘Many finales are a let down but Happy Valley wrapped up brilliantly.

Another masterclass from Sarah Lancashire and James Norton held his own opposite her. Sally Wainwright’s script, a masterclass in storytelling.’
