Home and Away veteran Christie Hayes reveals the moment she knew she landed her dream role on the soap

Former Home and Away star Christie Hayes has spoken of the audition process she went through to land her role on the iconic Aussie soap opera.

Speaking on Hit100.9’s Dan & Christie, the 35-year-old said her fondest memory of landing the role of Kirsty Sutherland was an emotional phone call with her mother.

She revealed that a call from her mum, in which she called her ‘Kirsty’, confirmed she’d got the job after eight months of auditions, screen tests and call-backs.

She added: ‘It twigged on me and my mother said, “You’ve got it,” and I screamed.’

The soap star became emotional as she recalled the phone call, and said it was a precious moment she would never forget.

‘I’m not crying because I got on Home and Away. I’m crying because that’s a moment I will remember from my mum for the rest of my life,’ she wept.

Christie dished other behind-the-scenes secrets last month when she revealed Britney Spears was set to have a cameo role on the soap back in 2001.

But she said the decision to have the pop star on the show ruffled some feathers with one very famous cast member: Ray Meagher.

‘Our producer Russel called a cast meeting and said, “Britney Spears wants to be on Home and Away, does anyone object?” Everyone said, “Yes,”‘ she said with a laugh.

Meagher, who has portrayed Alf Stewart on the series since 1988, expressed concern because he thought her cameo ‘would ruin the illusion of the show’.

Christie, however, was upbeat about the American singer appearing on the series, and was excited about filming a scene with her.

Unfortunately the Princess of Pop pulled out after the September 11 attacks over heightened security and travel concerns.
