The Guardians of the Galaxy director, 56, has taken on a new role as the new studio head of DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran, and the pair have recently begun making changes to future projects.
Due to his new role, the screenwriter has been bombarded with questions about the studio’s future, including upcoming casting announcements.
One rumor that has been circling is whether or not George Clooney, 61, will reprise his role as Batman in any new DC films.
Gunn replied to a tweet that asked: ‘Is it true you’re casting George Clooney as the new main DCU Batman?’ to which he replied, ‘Absolutely not.’
No return: James Gunn recently shared that George Clooney will not be reprising his role as Batman in the new era of DC Studios films; (L) Clooney in a 1997 still from Batman and Robin (R) Clooney pictured 2021
Setting the record straight: The 56-year-old director shared his thoughts on the rumors in a new Tweet, writing, ‘Absolutely not’
Another fan then asked: ‘Does this mean were still getting an actor who has already batman or were getting a new actor all together?’
The Peacemaker writer then responded: ‘New actor.’
Clooney played the titular character in the 1997 film Batman & Robin alongside Chris O’Donnell, Alicia Silverstone, Uma Thurman, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Despite not sharing much information, Gunn answered two heavy hitting questions.
Several different actors have played the role of Batman for many different franchises.
Most recently, the role was passed to Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson for the Warner Bros. film, which is set to release a sequel in 2025.
Gunn closed up that loose end by revealing that the sequel to The Batman will be an ‘Elseworlds’ story.
That means that it will place in a timeline completely separate from what he’s creating in the new DC Extended Universe.
Answering questions: Gunn also shared that a new actor will be playing the role of Batman in upcoming films

Affleck was the most recent DC Universe Batman, appearing in Batman vs. Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The major spark in questioning came from a tweet sent out by a film journalist named Grace Randolph, who is the creator and host of Beyond the Trailer on YouTube.
She tweeted: ‘I hear that it’s going to be a former #Batman who cameos at the end of #TheFlash & could potentially stick around as the new permanent #DCU Batman.’
Randolph also mentioned that she ‘knows who it is’ but that it would be ‘uncool to reveal the whole thing.’
Gunn and Safran took over DC Studios in October and remained relatively tight-lipped about what is to come for the studio.

Old DC: Gunn and Safran also announced that Henry Cavill won’t be returning as Superman
The news of the reset came as a shock to both the world and the actors.
Johnson’s Black Adam film, which he said took 10 years to make, came out mere weeks before Gunn and Safran took over and less than three months before the heads announced they would be resetting the timeline.
About a week ago, Gunn released a video on Instagram breaking down what the next several years will look like at DC Studios.
He announced new movies, TV shows, and casting. He also covered a lot of projects that will be released over the next 10 years.
One of the significant reveals was the first slate, dubbed Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
The Rock: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson played Black Adam, which was released in 2022, also won’t have a follow up movie
Cancelled: The third Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot was also scrapped
It will officially begin on July 11, 2025, with Superman Legacy after the universe is ‘reset’ by The Flash. In all, he laid out plans for five new films and five new TV series.
Safran and Gunn said their primary goal is to create a cohesive universe. While the pair did not mention their main competitor, Marvel Studios, it’s believed they are striving to follow in the footsteps of the entertainment giant.
Gunn became a household name after writing and directing all three of Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
However, while doing that, he also worked on several DC projects, such as The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
