Jason Manford has taken his Christmas tree down early after it shed needles prematurely and became bald, telling his children it was their ‘naughty’ elf on the shelf’s fault.

The comedian, 41, a father-of-six, took to Twitter to reveal his woes on Monday morning and said attempts to revive his family’s festive decoration including watering it had failed.

He explained that he had taken it down on Sunday night and left a note by the pile of needles from the ‘elf’ and a box of decorations.
