Carey has seen the flick and was very interested about the wild opening seen which involved an elephant which was CGI as she said: ‘To explain, the whole opening sequence is this enormously debauched, crazy, wild party. And there’s lots of people wearing very little or nothing.’

Margot replied: ‘It’s pretty much a party-slash-orgy. It kind of turns into an orgy.’

Carey said: ‘It’s a porgy! So who were all these background actors? Because they’re all incredible dancers.’

Margot said that a lot of those on set were dancers but also friends so there was a strong party atmosphere throughout filming.

She explained: ‘I would always have friends in the trailer. Base camp was a little ongoing party. I was like, I kind of need it for Nellie; I need her to never have a minute of quiet, never compose herself.’

Robbie’s character, Nellie LaRoy, is an an unhinged and convention-flouting starlet, largely based on the scandalous Clara Bow, Hollywood’s original It-girl and the first sex symbol of the silver screen’s silent era.

Just like Clara, the character of LaRoy throws herself into the outrageous excesses of the age, when cinema was transitioning from silent films to the talkies.

As well as sex, drugs and general debauchery, she is unpredictable in the extreme: she crowd-surfs at parties and wrestles a snake for thrills, all alongside another debauched and ageing actor, Jack Conrad, played by Brad Pitt.

Aside from Margot and Brad, the film’s star-studded cast includes Jean Smart, Olivia Wilde, Tobey Maguire, Katherine Waterson, Spike Jonze, Flea, Phoebe Tonkin, and Eric Roberts.

The Damien Chazelle written and directed flick Babylon is set for release on Friday, December 23.
