Olivia Wilde referenced ‘changing accents’ in a new interview after her boyfriend Harry Styles confused fans with his transatlantic twang in a new clip.

Harry‘s accent in a trailer for his film Don’t Worry Darling left people baffled over where his character is supposed to be from when it was released recently.

Following the online furore which ensued after the release of the trailer, Olivia made an ill-time reference to a ‘slight change in accent’, but it is unclear whether it was a nod to the recently controversy.

At the start of a chat with actress Maggie Gyllenhaal for Interview Magazine, Olivia questioned what happens if something goes wrong during the interview.

She said: ‘What if my entire personality changed? Like, I have a slight accent and everything about me changes, do you mention it?’

Maggie replied: ‘[Laughs] No, listen, we just hand them the tapes. You are who you are, starting right now.’

The coincidental remark came just days after the trailer for her upcoming film starring Harry was released on social media.

Harry, 28, stars alongside Florence Pugh in the psychological thriller – directed by his girlfriend Olivia – which is set in California in the 1950s.

A clip from the upcoming film was shared on social media and fans were left divided over Harry’s accent – with some claiming he is doing a bad imitation of an American accent, while others insisted his character is supposed to be British.

In the clip, Harry and Florence – who play a young married couple named Jack and Alice – are seen arguing over Jack’s job.

He says: ‘Not everyone gets this opportunity and if you keep talking like this, you’re going to put it all at risk.’

Alice replies: ‘You’re worried about a demotion, that’s what you’re worried about?’

Jack says: ‘Our life, Alice! Our life together, this, I could lose this.’

Florence, who is also English, does a noticeably American accent in the film while viewers thought Harry seemed to try out a few different twangs. 

Reacting to the clip, one Twitter user said: ‘Wow he really said Mr Worldwide with this accent flyover’.

Another user said: ‘American accent where?’ while another asked: ‘Is he meant to be English in it?’

One fan wrote: ‘When I tell you I wasn’t ready for Jack I wasn’t ready for Jack,’ to which someone else replied: ‘I don’t think anybody is ready for that “accent”‘.

Coronation Street actress Nicola Thorp defended Harry, writing: ‘Fuming at the comments about Harry’s accent on this post. 

‘Takes me back to drama school when a certain director told me my northern accent was ‘wrong’!? This IS what we sound like in the North-West, you’ve just been exposed to shite impersonations in the past.’

In the film, Florence’s character Alice begins to suspect the company her husband Jack owns is harbouring a dark secret. 

Don’t Worry Darling began shooting in Los Angeles in late 2020 but production was shut down for two weeks after someone on set tested positive for Covid-19.

It wrapped production in February 2021 and also stars Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Olivia.

The film sparked a bidding war among 18 studios who were all keen to acquire the project with New Line Cinema winning the auction.

Don’t Worry Darling is scheduled to be released on September 23.
