Paul Mescal has broken his silence on his split from Phoebe Bridgers  in an emotional new interview – after previously urging people speculating on the relationship to ‘shut the f*** up’.

The 27-year-old Oscar-nominee is featured on the cover of the latest edition of The Hollywood Reporter and opened up about the end of his romance from musician Bridgers, 28.

When asked if he will ever touch on the subject of their split, Mescal said: ‘Maybe at some point. But just not now. It’s just difficult territory. Yeah.’

It has been rumored for months that Mescal had split from 28-year-old musician Phoebe Bridgers which he has yet to address directly.

This was a much different answer to the one he gave in an interview just last week.

‘Sometimes I can drown it out and then other times it makes me really mad and upset,’ he told the latest issue of Vanity Fair

‘People are going to write and say things because there’s a certain interest with any person who’s in the public eye in how that person lives their life, and who they’re living up with, and what they’re doing and how they’re going about doing it.

‘And look, a lot of the time people are really kind about their support for me. That’s my predominant experience.’

Mescal, a self-confessed Bridgers fan prior to their first meeting, began dating the talented musician in 2020 – shortly after the remarkable BBC drama Normal People turned him into a household name.

Bridgers has since been linked to comedian Bo Burnham following a reported split in December, and Mescal admits questions regarding his former relationship are unwanted.

He said: ‘I definitely feel the temptation to say the status of my whatever—that will always be there. But I don’t think that’s a wise thing to do.

‘When Normal People came out, I was very forthright in interviews, and it didn’t actually serve me. But the temptation still exists to be like, “Shut the f**k up. This is my life. This is what’s going on. Or this is what’s going on.”

‘But moving forward as much as I can, that’s going to be my life that is private. That’s a difficult thing to achieve. But giving strangers an answer about my life doesn’t actually help me.

‘It’s like a quick boost of serotonin, being like, “I’ve said what I need to say.” And then it’s just Twitter fodder.’

Elsewhere in the chat, Mescal discussed his intimate first meeting with Nicole Kidman.

As Mescal starred in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida Theatre in North London, Kidman was in attendance at one of the recent shows where she led a standing ovation.

The Irish actor revealed that his first meeting with the Oscar-winner happened when he was in his underwear.

The hunky actor explained: ‘She came to the [men’s] dressing room. We were in our pants.’

The play had a successful run at the Almeida Theater and will now move on to a six-week run in London’s iconic West End in March.

While his nuanced role as the loving but deeply troubled Calum in Charlotte Wells’ directorial debut Aftersun has created an Oscar buzz, his next project is a major a step onto the international stage.

The actor is set to take a starring role in a planned sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic 2000 film Gladiator.

However he will not be playing Maximus, the Roman general-turned-gladiator, played by Russell Crowe in the original.

Instead, Mescal is rumoured to be playing Lucius Verus, the nephew of evil Commodus and a role originally filled by Spencer Treat Clark.
