Celebrity vet Dr Chris Brown was amazed to discover a family secret while filming the SBS genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?

The I’m a Celebrity host, 43, learned his great-great-grandfather William Roberts was the illegitimate son of noted socialite William Reddish.

He discovered Roberts’ birth was kept secret and registered under his mother’s name along with another of Reddish’s illegitimate children.

Upon discovering this new branch of his family and their circumstances, Chris said: ‘This is a desperate situation.’

‘I’m going to have to fight against every single temptation when I have kids not give them the middle name Reddish so they are Reddish-Brown,’ he laughed. 

‘It just writes itself, really!’

Chris appeared on the show after his mix of creative and scientific passions made him a black sheep of his family.

But his perception of himself changed when he dug into his past and found ‘all the other black sheep’.

‘This journey has revealed a family history that I’m immensely proud of,’ he added.

The Bondi Vet star enjoyed expressing himself through the arts despite being born to a veterinarian father and paediatric therapist mother, who guided and supported him into the medical field. 

Chris said: ‘There’s some sort of internal battle going on between the arts and science. They duel it out inside me each day to see who comes out on top.’

As he looked back into his family history on Who Do You Think You Are?, he found the answer to his questions.

He learned Roberts was a photographer, which mirrors Chris’ own passion for taking pictures.

‘Perhaps that’s where it comes from,’ he remarked.

When he went further back into his family tree, he found another ancestor who was a renowned painter.  

‘I think being a part of this experience really shows you that family is everything,’ Chris told TV Week

‘They’re what grounds you and gives you perspective… and let’s be real, the ones who occasionally frustrate you!

‘But seeing the joy and intrigue that family brought these relatives of mine did provide quite the emotional ride.’

Chris will feature in the new season of Who Do You Think You Are? which airs Tuesday at 7.30pm on SBS
